Biology senior Megan Kane is completing her internship capstone with the Living Legacy Foundation, an organ procurement organization that facilitates the organ and tissue donation process by identifying appropriate donors and working with their families to obtain consent for organ donation. She’s shown here in front of the State Medical Examiner’s Office, where she participates in rounds every morning, observing and cataloging potential tissue donors.

Biology senior John Amoroso completed his capstone research in the University of Maryland laboratory of Dr. Geoffrey Schoenbaum, studying learning and memory in rats. John’s work measured the activity of individual neurons as rats were conditioned to respond to sound and light stimuli. Through his capstone, John gained valuable experience that will no doubt help him as he moves on to medical school after graduation.

Antoinette worked in the laboratory of Dr. Carole Stzalryd at the University of Maryland, studying molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolism. Antoinette presented her work at the 12th Annual Fall Science and Math Research and Internship Poster Session in January.

Biology faculty member Wendy Kimber and her student Amanda Hieatzmann took some time out from presenting their research at the recent Keystone Symposium on Stem Cells to enjoy some of the winter activities in Colorado. Amanda traveled with Dr. Kimber to present a poster on her research on gene expression patterns in embryonic stem cells. According to Dr. Kimber, many world renown scientists commented on the high caliber of Amanda’s work. Way to go Amanda and Dr. Kimber!

Biology senior Sarah Mills is shown here at her capstone internship. Sarah is working at the Calvert Veterinary Clinic in Pasadena, Maryland. Her duties include checking in patients, helping to restrain pets for medical procedures, performing laboratory tests and assisting on surgeries. She is gaining valuable practical experience that will serve her well as she moves on into a career in veterinary medicine.

Biology junior Tommy Fuller is pictured here with Dr. Anthony Gaspari, the University of Maryland physician who was recently featured on The Dr. Oz Show and a Discovery Health Channel documentary for his efforts to treat the “Tree Man” of Indonesia. Dr. Gaspari came to campus to share his experiences as part of the School of the Sciences Monthly Seminar Series. The audience was amazed by Dr. Gaspari’s pictures of the Tree Man and his description of his travels and experiences.

Junior Andy Vallade recently presented his fall research to visitors at the 12th Annual Fall Research and Internship Poster Session. Andy worked with biology faculty member Joe Matanoski, studying invasive species at the Soldier’s Delight Nature Area. His work has implications for the management of these species and the preservation of the endogenous species in the area.

Jessica Scarpola – Fall 2009

Jessica Scarpola (BIO ‘09) spent her fall semester doing an internship at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Genetics Research Facility. Jessica was responsible for implementing a new electronic biotracking system that she helped design. The system is designed to label and code thousands of biological samples that are collected as part of clinical research studies all over the country. The BGRF is a repository for these samples, cataloging them and preparing them as needed for various study sites.

Sophomore Amanda Hieatzman will travel to Colorado with biology faculty member Wendy Kimber this month to present her research at the Keystone Symposium on Stem Cells. Amanda studied the expression of ubiquitin-related genes during the early development of mouse embryonic cells. She will present her work as a poster at the 3-day meeting, where she will interact with world-renown stem cell scientists. Congratulations Amanda!
