Biology senior Megan Kane, who graduated this May, is shown here presenting her work at her Senior Capstone Internship this spring. Megan worked at the Living Legacy Foundation, which is responsible for coordinating all organ donations in most of the State of Maryland. As part of her daily activities, Megan accompanied her mentor to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for rounds so that they could identify potential tissue donors. Megan used this experience to explore in depth the issues associated with tissue donation and make recommendations about how to increase the numbers of donors.

Jessica Scarpola (BIO ‘09) spent her fall semester doing an internship at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Genetics Research Facility. Jessica was responsible for implementing a new electronic biotracking system that she helped design. The system is designed to label and code thousands of biological samples that are collected as part of clinical research studies all over the country. The BGRF is a repository for these samples, cataloging them and preparing them as needed for various study sites.

Biology students participated in SU’s recent Learning Beyond Fair, showcasing the many opportunities that exist for SU students to learn beyond the classroom in internships, service learning, research and other experiences. Biology seniors Matt Bramble (on the left) and Ryan Krempel (not shown) displayed posters of research done for the senior capstone experience and in summer research programs, and sophomore Andrew Wegerski (on the right) talked with students about his internship at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. All three students also talked about the service learning experiences they have had working at the Soldier’s Delight Natural Area, clearing invasive species and other activities.
